How To - Go From 78 years old to 79 years Young

I got that dreaded call, my Mom cried when she let me know that Dad’s health has deteriorated so much (Diabetic Neuropathy), that Dad could not hold a glass of water or even a fork in his left hand to feed himself. Mom asked me for help… and RIGHT NOW.

What was I to do? How could I help? Who also could help us?

Well Dad health has been on the declined for the last 4 years since his full retirement as a Pastor and he had what we thought, was the best of care via a top Gerontology Physician at the VA clinic, Orthopedic Surgeon, Doctor of Chiropractic, Physical Therapists, Heart Doctor and an excellent General Practitioner surely they could help right? No, his steady decline was not stopped by any of these practitioners.

Dad’s condition had steadily declined where most of the time he moved about with his trusted wheel chair and he spent most of the day watching TV in his favorite chair and having all his Meals served to him. His private washing up time became more and more assisted and less and less private. He could walk some painful steps to go to the Bath Room and to the car for those weekly Doctor visits which were the only things getting him out of the house.

Two days after this call, I got on a plane, arrived at Dulles International Airport, picked up a rental car and drove two ½ hours to my parents home in the Upper Neck of VA. Are you ready for the miracle? A new healing team was achieved; each of my parents could now help the other, in ways they never even dream of helping before now with incredible results. Hum, I know that to take out the garbage in their community, a car/truck was needed and someone had to haul the garbage to the car and load it, then drive to the special dump bins on the edge of their community and then basically throw the garbage high into the large dump bins. This was uncomfortable for me to do, when I visited and did this chore for them, and now Dad was hauling the garbage himself, driving and now throwing it into the bin? Heck, Dad had not drove for the last two plus years and now he was driving unassisted, wow was he getting better or what?

Now, two weeks rolled by and instead of fearing what I might hear on the other end of the phone, I called and this time my father answers the phone like day long past. He answered with Strong voice, “Pastor Finsterle”, Quick as a flash I knew what that meant, Dad was going to preach again soon and this means for the first time in 3 plus years, my father was strong enough to stand on his own for 30 minutes and be able to walk without a walker down the long aisle to the pulpit. WOW… Dad really was getting better and stronger.

So now, Dad is 79 years young…. He is preaching again some Sundays, driving again every week, doing garbage duty, cooking and preparing food for my mom (never did that before) and they are both enjoying their increased physical mobility and his physical Life back. Dad’s depression has lifted and now he has new things to be concerned about instead of his not being able to walk and help himself. What great news! I just want to sing it from the Mountain Tops!
